What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a gentle energy healing art. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words, Rei – meaning the Universal Source of Life Force; and Ki – meaning Energy. A Reiki Practitioner channels Universal Life Force Energy through their hands (or through visualization if by distance), and the person receiving the energy usually feels a relaxed sense of peace and well-being. While Reiki is spiritual (and it often aligns people with their spiritual purpose in life), it is not a religion and it can help all beings.

What are some potential benefits of Reiki?

Reiki can help with reducing stress and stress-related conditions such as insomnia (and any sleep-related troubles), anxiety, depression, addictions, and high blood pressure. Reiki can also ease the aches and pains associated with aging, and can make the dying process more peaceful. Reiki works well along with other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote overall healing.

What can I expect during and after a Reiki healing session?

During a Reiki healing session, the client lies down fully clothed on a massage table. The Reiki Practitioner gently lays their hands on different areas of the body, allowing Reiki energy to flow from the hands into the body. The warm radiance of the energy often relaxes the receiver so much that they fall asleep. Each client has the perfect experience that they need to have in that moment.

Because the Universal Life Force Energy is non-violent, it won’t force anything to happen. The Energy itself is intelligent and it only works to the degree that the receiver gives permission for healing to happen. Thus there is no danger in receiving too much energy, but rather the client will receive just the right amount of energy that they are open to receiving in that moment. Also, the Reiki Practitioner doesn’t decide where the energy will go (or in what order), but rather, the Energy itself knows where to work and when!

At the end of the session, the Reiki Practitioner helps to ground the energies, typically by sending energy into the client’s feet. After the session, it is generally recommended to drink plenty of water to help flush toxins out of the body. (Please consult with your primary healthcare provider if you have a condition in which you should not drink too much water.)

The Reiki Energy continues to promote healing in the body, mind, heart, and spirit during the hours and days following the Reiki healing session. Therefore, it can be a wonderful time for self-reflection. Taking some time each day to notice your thoughts, feelings, sensations, and dreams can give you much insight into your current healing process.

What other services do you offer?

As a Reiki Practitioner, I am committed to doing all that I can to help heal myself, others, and this sacred earth. So, I also offer vegan meal preparation, vegan education, and meditation circles which include the spiritual practices that I do in my daily life – chanting (singing) with harmonium; silent meditation; Reiki meditations and attunements; and reading the spiritual teachings of saints and mystics. I am greatly inspired by Ammachi, Neem Karoli Baba-ji, Gandhi-ji, Anandamayi Ma, Ramana Maharshi, Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, Jesus, the Buddha, Green Tara, and many others!

Dr. Mikao Usui, the sweet being who re-discovered the Reiki energy healing system in the late 1800’s, created five Reiki principles, that serve as a wonderful daily prayer:

Just for today I will not worry.
Just for today I will not be angry.
Just for today I will do my work honestly and humbly.
Just for today I will give thanks for my blessings.
Just for today I will be kind and show gratitude to my neighbors and to all living things.
