At the ShivaRatri all-night chanting event, a dear sister whispered in my ear, “You are the healthiest vegan I know – the other vegans I know aren’t so healthy – what are you doing?!” I told her a few things amidst the Shiva chanting, but there was more that I wanted to say, and I thought my answers might be helpful to others as well, so I will write them here today.

According to some Mayan Calendar sources, today, March 9th, 2011, is the day that time will speed up by twenty times. If that is true, then this blog article will be desperately needed by many people, because the number one thing that I do to stay healthy as a vegan is focusing on keeping myself grounded. Of course I eat healthy, organic foods, but my primary focus is on selecting the foods that will keep me grounded at any given moment.

I cook a lot of beans and grains, such as: garbanzo beans, black beans, lentils (green and red), mung beans, brown rice, wild rice, millet, quinoa, and oats. I include the following “toppings” on at least one meal each day: organic flax oil, Himalayan krystal salt, and nutritional yeast. For breakfast, I mash a banana and mix it with the following “toppings”: Vitamineral Green powder (1 Tablespoon), raw cacao nibs, cinnamon and ginger (powders), and raw cashews. I also take vitamins C, D, and a multi-vitamin each day. And, of course, I eat organic nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables. If you have any specific questions about my diet, please post them in the comments section below this article. (Before posting questions, please read my previous blog “Why Eat Vegan” from 9-9-10.)

Beyond the foods I eat, I do regular, daily spiritual practices that keep me grounded. Some people say that spiritual practices make them feel more spacey. If that is the case for you, try focusing your attention more on the root chakra (Muladhara), the energy center at the base of your spine. Please read the blog article I posted on 9-24-10, “Grounded at the Root” for more information on grounding spiritual energies. You might also like to read my pocket book, Radiance Rising: Spiritual Practices for Daily Living, available in print and e-book versions on this website store.

If time is truly speeding up today, then it is more important than ever to slow down internally. We each can make such a difference in visioning a healthy earth into being – by eating organic vegan foods, by taking the time to go inside and ground ourselves each day, and by helping others to do the same. If you know in your heart that eating vegan is the right thing to do for this sacred earth and her beloved creatures, then you will have the full support of the Universe to be as healthy as I am while eating a vegan diet.

May all beings be free to live and enjoy healthy lives. May all the creatures be loved and protected by the humans. May we all understand the interconnectedness of everything, everything, everything… Cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, humans: ALL ONE!

Om Shanti (Peace),

Yogini Tejaswini

We create our realities with our thoughts. Cultivating the witness, that part of our minds that objectively watches everything we are, allows us to clearly see all of our thoughts. Through the power of watching our thoughts, we gradually change the way we perceive the world. We shift from viewing the world as a serious court of justice to seeing this universe as a joyous playground. Like gleeful children, we get to play and celebrate during this lifetime we've been given. On the playground we enjoy ourselves fully, even if sometimes we scrape our knees or get our hearts broken! No matter what pains we go through, we can't let the heartbreaks keep us from opening up and having a good time on the playground.

Here is a bit of news from the fun I'm having lately on the Tejaswini Playground ~

~ I continue to enjoy creating all kinds of vegan food combinations. This morning I heated up some leftover rice (long grain brown rice and wild rice), along with some walnuts, raisins, and dried cranberries. Then I stirred in some raw cacao nibs, cinnamon, and two potent powders by HealthForce Nutritionals: Vitamineral Green and MacaForce.  As I ate that incredibly delicious bowl of nourishment, I felt deep gratitude for all the organic vegan food that supports my temple body.

~ Even though I’ve still experienced some romantic-lila-related-sorrow in my being (despite continually focusing on my brahmacharya vow), the overall theme emerging in my life this past month has been one of gratitude, praise, and celebration. One day I ran into a woman who had attended the Radiance Rising Circle the night before, and she said, “So you’re a healer and a praiser?” I loved that so much – I hadn’t thought of myself as a “praiser” before, but indeed that is a large part of who I am.

~ Albert Einstein said, “If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.” I understand that the sorrow states that pass through my being are caused by an attachment to a certain person, so I am now consciously focusing my attention (again and again) on my goals for life. To that end, I wrote out the following intentions: attitude of Gratitude; positive thinking; enthusiasm; merging in Union with Lord Shiva; and serving others. Union with Shiva represents detachment and the Pure Bliss gained through detachment.  Anandamayi Ma, Blissful mystic and sage of India (1896-1982), describes the process of merging with Shiva in this way:

“Shiva, the Eternal Spirit, has resolved Himself into jivas, sentient beings, and every creature has to become reconverted again into Shiva. Just as water freezes into ice, and ice melts into water, so this play of transformation of Shiva into jiva and jiva into Shiva goes on and on through eternity.”  (Women of Power and Grace: Nine Astonishing, Inspiring Luminaries of Our Time, by Timothy Conway, Ph.D., the Wake Up Press, Santa Barbara, CA, 1995.)

~ As I am slowly building my Reiki energy healing practice (www.ashlandholistichealth.com), I have had the opportunity to enjoy some trades with other practitioners. One such trade was with a very gifted Tarot Card reader. Through the reading I received guidance to remember that everything serves Spirit and all energies are workable. One of the cards indicated that I should become the Master Alchemist and work with the energies associated with my current life situation.

~ A few weeks ago a brief stomach flu passed through my body. I went for acupuncture, and during the session a new mantra/affirmation/intention arose in me: “I am happy and healthy, and I WANT GOD!”

~ That affirmation echoed the little mantra that was buzzing in my head during the Radiance Rising Circle on Ammachi’s 57th birthday: “I want to sit in circles with people singing to God until I die!” Here is one of my favorite quotes from Amma, the Hugging Saint from India, who is a Guru to millions of people (including me): “Life should blossom into total laughter. This is religion. This is spirituality. This is real prayer. God is the innocent, spontaneous smile that blossoms from within.” (Lead Us to Purity: A Selection of Sri Mata Amritanandamayi’s Speeches, 1990-1999, Compiled by Swami Jnanamritananda, M.A. Center, San Ramon, CA, 2007.)

~ At the weekly Radiance Rising Circles, my natural smile blossoms from within. The week after we celebrated Amma’s birthday, we honored the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. I had already celebrated Gandhi-ji’s birthday at a fire circle on his actual birthday, but since I love birthdays, I brought his photo (with curly ribbons attached) to the Radiance Rising Circle too. In his honor we chanted to Sita and Ram, and sometimes I substituted, “Be the Change You Wanna See, Jai Jai Ram,” for the traditional Rama mantra, “Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram” (Victory to Lord Rama).

~ For more detailed musings about many of my life happenings, please follow this Teja Blog. Recent blog article titles include: “My Vegan Tempeh Dinner,” “An Abundance of Gratitude,” “Grounded at the Root,” “The Story of a Blessing Way Circle,” “Happy Birthday to Ammachi and to Gandhi-ji!,” “Vegan Risotto,” and “Nourished by the Light of the Divine Mother.”

~ Regular, daily spiritual practices continue to nourish and strengthen me. Through sitting in silent meditation morning and evening, and through cultivating the Witness, working with the chakras, chanting (singing) devotional songs, studying spiritual teachings, and serving others, I raise my vibration and strengthen my core. I feel so inspired to share these practices with others, because they have helped me so much on my journey.

~ In high school I was a cheerleader, and those cheerleading qualities of enthusiasm and passion still live in me. Now, instead of cheering for the Tigers to win the basketball game, I’m cheering for people to open their hearts through doing regular spiritual practices. That is why I wrote Radiance Rising: Spiritual Practices for Daily Living. In this easy-to-read pocketbook, I give basic instructions for beginning a meditation practice, and I outline the other practices that I do on the Raja Yoga Path. This book would make a great holiday gift for yourself and for many of your friends and family, so I recently put it on sale at half-price, through December 16th, 2010. Please go to thhis website store to order your copies today! (Please note that 10% of every sale and donation on my website goes to Amma’s charitable organizations. www.amma.org)

~ A few nights ago, I attended an amazing event with renowned storyteller, author and mythologist, Michael Meade. Since he was promoting his new book, Fate and Destiny: The Two Agreements of the Soul, his dynamic presentation centered around fate and destiny. He explained that we are each born seeded with a destiny, and that destiny is hidden within the challenges of our fate. Through colorful storytelling, he imparted the message that we each have a responsibility to discover who we truly are and what gifts we have to give to the world. He ended the beautiful and inspiring evening with Rumi’s poem “Each Note.” Here is my favorite part of that poem:

God picks up the reed-flute world and blows.
Each note is a need coming through one of us,
a passion, a longing-pain.

Remember the lips
where the wind-breath originated,
and let your note be clear.
Don’t try to end it.
BE Your Note.
I’ll show you how it’s enough.

Go up on the roof at night
in the city of the soul.

Let Everyone climb on their roofs
and sing their notes!

Sing loud!

~ This autumn has been a particularly busy time for this yogini, because my two sons (ages 10 and 13) are now involved in sports and musical instruments, along with all the school stuff. The past few weeks I witnessed myself going through a cute little cycle of overwhelm, so this weekend I took a lot of time alone to remember that I am not the doer, and I am not in charge of time! Since last night was the final night of the 9-night Hindu festival, Navarathri, that honors Shakti, the Divine Feminine, I sat down with my harmonium and chanted to Kali Ma, the most fierce Hindu aspect of the Divine Mother. Kali represents Time, and She helps to conquer the illusions of the ego, such as me thinking that I’m really in control of time here! Again and again, I surrender my little will to the Divine Will.

May you enjoy the playground of your life.

May all beings have food, clothing, shelter, and spiritual upliftment each day.

May all beings everywhere know Peace and Happiness.

Om Shanti (Peace),

Yogini Tejaswini

Here is a bit of news from the fun I'm having lately on the Tejaswini Playground ~

~ By far, the most fun I’ve had lately was collaborating with my sons to create a video. One Sunday afternoon we transformed our temple cottage into a video production studio, and many hours (and much chocolate) later, we uploaded our video to YouTube. It is my yogini version of pop-star P!nk’s song “So What.” Dedicated to all broken-hearted beings out there, it is short, sweet, and delightfully uplifting. Please enjoy it by clicking on this link: Yogini Tejaswini's Parody of P!nk's "So What."

~ I also wrote a short blog article about the video: "Parody Video of P!nk's Song So What"

~ My most exciting news is that I am now offering Reiki sessions two half-days each week at Ashland Holistic Health, office of acupuncturist Jenn Collins. The space is warm and calm, and the energy feels great. I am filled with Gratitude for how easily and effortlessly it lined up for me to be there. With each session I give, the Reiki energy is getting stronger, and I am experiencing the preciousness of each human body. I feel so blessed to be a Reiki practitioner.

~ The Monday evening Radiance Rising Circles are ever evolving, as those who attend help shape what I offer. It is a co-creative, spontaneous arising of shared spiritual practices. Lately the format has shifted to chanting first, then silent meditation, and then more chanting. It was predicted ages and ages ago, that during this age the practice of kirtan (call-and-response singing) would spread to every village on earth… the reason being that during this age of hypocrisy, density, and greed, singing is the easiest way for us to connect with the Divine. That certainly is my personal experience!

~ I continue to enjoy blogging so much. Please enjoy my recent articles on Reiki: “Reiki Meditation on Mt. Shasta”  and “Reiki by the River”  as well as my latest article on veganism, entitled “Why Eat Vegan?

~ After I wrote “Why Eat Vegan?” I sent the following message to our local food co-op, and asked them to print it in their next newsletter:

Greetings! I've been an Ashland Co-op shopper since 1993 when I moved to town. I have been a vegetarian for many years, and one year ago I shifted to eating a vegan diet. There are many reasons to go vegan, a few of which I outline in my blog article “Why Eat Vegan?”

Did you know that livestock production contributes more to global warming than all of the cars and trucks combined? And do you know that eating meat causes unnecessary suffering to the creatures? No matter how "humanely" or organically the meat is produced, the creatures still suffer.

Sometimes when I enter the Co-op, I am so offended by the smell of dead animals cooking, that I have to go straight to the aromatherapy oils and put them under my nose. I would love to see the Co-op, at the very least, join Paul McCartney's Meat Free Monday campaign.

~ By choice (and by destiny, if there is a difference!), I spend a lot of time alone: doing spiritual practices, studying, writing, and so on… during all that time on my “contemplative playground,” all sorts of reflections and realizations pass through me, and I love posting them on facebook and then reading people’s comments. This facebook post is my favorite:

"We create our realities with our thoughts, so we should always think positively, but sometimes our karmas, emotions, and hormones take over, making positive thinking a challenge, at best. During those times i witness my unpleasant thoughts, hold onto the Lotus Feet of God through chanting the Names, and read people's inspiring facebook posts... until things shift... and sometimes i drink some coffee too..."

~ My last bit of news is I finally found resolution with Rama! To read that story, go to the blog article called "Back in Rama Bhakti."

~ I'll end this newsletter with a quote from the Bhagavad Gita, 2:40:

"On this path effort never goes to waste, and there is no failure.
Even a little effort toward spiritual awareness will protect you from the greatest fear."

May you each enjoy the playground of your life!

May all beings everywhere know Peace and Happiness.

Last night my older son had an interesting dream, in which we were in a boat on the ocean, and a woman was offering us fish and butter. Due to my vegan diet, I said no, and then suggested to the boys that we dive down and find some seaweed to eat instead!

Why do I choose to eat a vegan diet? I choose to not eat meat, fish, eggs, and dairy for many reasons: because I care about the suffering of the creatures, because I care about the environment of this Beloved Mother Earth, and because I care about the health of my body.

There is no denying that the creatures suffer. No matter how “humanely” or organically the animal products are produced, the creatures still suffer. More than doing a lot of research (and there is plenty of information available for the scientific types), I turned inward and meditated on the fish and animals, and then I could no longer find any justification for eating animal products.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Spiritual progress does demand at some stage that we should cease to kill our fellow creatures for the satisfaction of our bodily wants.” And Dexter Scott King, son of Martin Luther King, Jr., said the following: "Veganism has given me a higher level of awareness and spirituality." (Vegetarian Times, 10/95) I have found this to be true as well. Since I shifted to a vegan diet, my meditation practice has deepened and I feel more mentally clear and more spiritually awake. Now I more keenly sense the interconnectedness of all things.

Regarding the environment, I recently joined a page on Facebook, called The Green Club, which has very good information, including the fact that livestock production contributes more to global warming than all of the cars and trucks combined. For that reason, a town in Belgium has declared Thursdays to be meat and fish free days, and Paul McCartney has started a major campaign called Meat Free Monday.

There are also many studies indicating that vegans enjoy improved physical health. I feel so much bliss in my being when I am cooking organic vegan foods, and that bliss vibration goes into the food and then into the beings who eat the food. I am grateful that my son dreamt that I was suggesting we dive for seaweed instead of eating fish and butter. I see that as a positive sign, that he is integrating my vegan ethics into his being.

May all beings have food to eat each day. May all beings everywhere know Peace and Happiness.

Om Shanti (Peace),

Yogini Tejaswini

A friend once told me that I am a “magician in the kitchen.” Yesterday I definitely felt the correctness of that label. There is an alchemy to my kitchen creations, which begins with the following rituals: first I light a candle and a stick of incense, then I turn on some chanting music and sing while waving the incense all around my cottage. I continue singing as I turn on the flame beneath the pot of beans, and begin chopping the vegetables.

Last night I was cooking and singing along with my current favorite chant artist, Girish, when my dear friend Thomas walked by. I invited him in to join me for the vegan feast I had created, which we enjoyed while listening to Girish’s “Reveal” CD. www.girishmusic.com.

When we sing while cooking, the positive sound vibrations go into the food, which makes the food not only taste better, but it also transforms the food into being a carrier of high vibrations. Thus, chanting while cooking brings healing to our inner beings, to the environment, and to our physical bodies.

I am very committed to raising my vibration and helping to raise the vibration of the human species. Chanting Sanskrit mantras from my heart raises my vibration and then that ripples out to others. When our vibrations go up, we then care more about what we put into our bodies. Organic, vegan foods are better for our bodies and they are better for the environment.

Here is the menu for the vegan dinner I prepared last night: quinoa cooked with Himalayan Krystal Salt, beets boiled and then sprinkled with the same salt, a curried mung bean dal cooked with lots of fresh ginger, and a savory vegetable sauté. For the sauté, first I put an onion in a few tablespoons of grapeseed oil, then added soy sauce and the following vegetables, as I chopped them, in this order: turnip, rutabega, carrot, garlic cloves, portabella mushroom, green kale, and fresh basil leaves. I served the meal with more fresh basil on top.

I absolutely love cooking, especially when I am singing at the same time. Singing and cooking with an open heart takes me to a state of inner Bliss. As I watch myself expanding, I feel incredible gratitude: for the food, for the music, and for the ever-expanding spiritual practice of cultivating the witness. The more I consciously witness myself, the greater the expansions become.

As I enjoy healthy vegan cuisine, I also remember that nearly 1 billion people are starving on this planet right now. I feel intense grief about that, so I am limiting the amount of food that I eat at each meal, to help myself remember all those starving people. I also donate money to Amma, as she is working tirelessly to feed the poor and suffering. www.amma.org.

May all beings everywhere know Peace and Happiness.

Om Shanti (Peace),

Yogini Tejaswini

Here is a bit of news from the fun I'm having lately on the Tejaswini Playground ~

~ A few weeks ago I took my boys snow-shoeing up on Mt. Ashland. It was one of those days with blue sky and bright sunshine, so we had a spectacular view of Mt. Shasta. After an hour of fun in the snow, we enjoyed the hot spicy cocoa I had brought in our sturdy Stanley thermos. We listened to MC Yogi's "Elephant Power," CD on the way home… My sons are now pre-teens and they really love rap and hip hop music, so MC Yogi appeals to them, which is great since I get to enjoy the Sanskrit mantras that are mixed in… "Jai Ganesha… Ganesh is so fresh chillin' on his throne…When I say Jai, You say Ganesh!" We are all thrilled that MC Yogi will perform live in Ashland on April 3rd. (To view a catchy song that MC Yogi recently created, called "Give Love," go to: http://vimeo.com/9366405)

~ I continue to enjoy writing regularly for the Teja Blog on my website, www.yogini-bliss.com. A few of my recent blog post titles include: "This Is It: Make That Change," "Freedom from Addictions to Television and to Anxieties," and "My Vegan Lunch Today." I've also been delighted to witness poems coming through me again. Soon I will post some of the new poems on the Poetry Gallery at yogini-bliss.com. In addition to the poetry flowing through, I've been receiving "downloads" for film ideas again. One of the film ideas is really quite good, and I could see it doing well as a major motion picture, so I'm intending that the universe works its magic for me to meet Stephen Simon or James Cameron!

~ On February 28th, I posted a blog called "The Teja Challenge," in which I challenged people to give up alcohol, nicotine, ganja, and other substances for a one-year period, during which time I will send them Reiki healing energy each day. So far, only one person has taken the challenge. He is doing quite well, and I look forward to working with more people who are ready to free themselves from addictive substances. One person (who is considering taking the challenge) posted a comment after the article asking what he would do without ganja when he felt bored and craved distraction from the turmoil of his mind. Here is most of my response to him:

"… Meditation and other spiritual practices will not only pass the time, they will transform you so that the turmoil will fade away into the vast loving universe that supports you. The thing is, the mind is easily habituated, which is a problem when it is habituated to drugs and destructive thought patterns, but it is a big help when the mind is habituated to meditation and other spiritual practices. The mind really likes to hold onto something - it is like a small child clinging to its parent. So, if you give the mind spiritual practices to hold onto (instead of ganja and other harmful substances), then the mind will very quickly become habituated to the positive practices and begin to cling to them.

"Ultimately, the goal is to purify and free the mind from all clinging, but most of us are not ready for that, so at the stage we are at now, we substitute spiritual practices for harmful addictions. We allow the mind to cling to meditation and other spiritual practices, and through those practices we purify our minds, gradually releasing all the negative tendencies.

"For those who choose to take the Teja Challenge, I highly recommend sitting in meditation at least once each day for 20-30 minutes. I also recommend reading my new book Radiance Rising: Spiritual Practices for Daily Living, as well as reading many other books with spiritual teachings.

"You can pass the time reading spiritual teachings, sitting in meditation, singing along with chanting CDs, and spending time in nature. Gradually your mind will adjust to the new activities, and your mind will become calmer. This will be a process, and there will be difficult moments, but life will always present difficulties, no matter what path we choose, so we may as well choose a path of positive self-love and growth.

~ Recently a friend and I watched a really beautiful movie called HOME (which you can actually watch on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqxENMKaeCU), and they gave statistics about the amount of resources that are used to produce the massive amounts of grain needed to feed all the livestock that is then killed so people can eat meat. It was another great reminder of how choosing to eat a vegan diet is not only beneficial for personal health reasons, it is also better for the planet. On that note, here are a few vegan recipes for you to enjoy:

Forbidden Black Rice Teja Style:

Cook rice in water with a few spoonfuls of coconut oil, plus a bit of Himalayan krystal salt and some cumin powder. Toss the cooked rice with raw cashews, shredded coconut, nutritional yeast flakes, organic flax seed oil, raw ginger root* chopped finely, raw turmeric root* chopped finely, Himalayan krystal salt, and the juice of half a Meyer lemon. So Yummy! Food is God. (Well, according to the Yogic wisdom of ancient India, everything and everyone is part of the Oneness that is God, so you really could say that this rice dish is God!)

* Ginger and turmeric for added immune system boosting.

Rainbow Chard with Pinenuts:

Saute pinenuts and garlic (chopped finely) in olive oil for a few minutes, then add rainbow chard, a tablespoon of soy sauce, and the juice of half a Meyer lemon.

Please buy organic whenever possible. It is better for your body and better for the environment.

~ The weekly Radiance Rising Circles continue to be a source of much joy for me. I am so grateful to everyone who comes to share their hearts in these monday evening gatherings. We sit in silent meditation, share spiritual teachings, and chant sacred songs. My friend Andy has been leading the chants on his harmonium, and he is encouraging me to learn how to play my harmonium too! This is the first instrument I've ever played, so it's a whole new experience for me. For now I am proud that I can lead some mantra toning, but soon I will learn to play some actual songs.

~ My new book, Radiance Rising: Spiritual Practices for Daily Living, has now (finally) gone to the printer in Michigan. I should have the 1,000 copies in my cottage (now where am I going to put them?!) by the end of March. Written from my perspective as a Raja Yogini, this pocketbook describes basic spiritual practices that anyone - of any faith - could apply to their own spiritual path. Pre-orders are now discounted on the website store… they will be discounted until April 10th.

~ One of my favorite inspiring reads is The Intenders Handbook, Revised 2007 Edition, by Tony Burroughs. (www.intenders.com) In this little book, I found this gem of a quote:

"What you are reaching toward is also reaching out toward you."

May you enjoy the playground of your life.

May all beings everywhere know Peace and Happiness.

Om Shanti (Peace),
